What to ask so you understand the cost before you commit.

It's easy to feel rushed when someone you love is in jail. Slow down long enough to ask a few questions:

• What is the total fee? Ask for the number in writing.
• Is the fee refundable? Usually it is not, because it pays for the bondsman's guarantee of the full bail.
• Is collateral needed? It depends on the bond.
• Are there other charges? Ask plainly.
